How Name Numerology Works
Every letter is given a number. We add those numbers up, then reduce them step by step until a single digit (or a master number) remains. We offer the two systems people ask for most — pick one, or compare both. Pythagorean Numerology Letter Values
The modern Western standard, attributed to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras. Letters are assigned values 1–9 in their natural sequence (A=1, B=2 …). It is widely considered the most mathematically harmonious approach for Western languages, and it is where most people begin.

Chaldean Numerology Letter Values
Originating in ancient Babylon, the Chaldean system is phonetic, focusing on the vibration of sounds rather than letter sequence. Values run 1–8; the number 9 is held sacred and rarely assigned to a single letter.

How Birth Date Numbers Are Calculated
Two numbers come from the date rather than the name. The Life Path is worked out by reducing the month, the day and the year separately — the year first by adding its four digits together — and then adding those three results and reducing once more. Doing it in that order, rather than adding the whole date in one go, is what lets a master number survive in any of the three parts. The Birth Day number is simpler: it is the day of the month on its own, reduced.
How Numbers Are Reduced
Reducing means adding a number's digits together, and repeating until one digit is left — 38 becomes 3 + 8 = 11, and 11 becomes 1 + 1 = 2. There is one exception, and it matters: if a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, we stop there and keep it.
Master Numbers 11, 22 and 33
The numbers 11, 22 and 33are considered highly potent spiritual frequencies. Name & Numbers does not reduce these to a single digit — it preserves them wherever they appear in your profile. What each one signifies is set out in the numerology number meanings.
Pythagorean vs Chaldean Numerology
The short version: Pythagorean runs 1–9 in alphabetical order and is what most modern Western readings use; Chaldean runs 1–8, is assigned by sound rather than sequence, and holds 9 back as sacred. The same name will often reduce to two different numbers, which is why the calculator offers a Compare Both option instead of insisting one tradition is correct.
Nothing here is improvised. The Pythagorean system is the modern Western standard. The Chaldean is the older, sound-based tradition that the palmist and numerologist Cheiro popularised in the West — and we implement it properly, values 1–8 with 9 held sacred, rather than relabelling the Pythagorean table and calling it Chaldean.
The ruling planets we assign — 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Uranus, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Neptune, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars — are the classical attributions, and they genuinely drive the readings rather than decorating them. The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are preserved wherever they appear instead of being flattened to 2, 4 and 6 — which is where a great many free calculators quietly cut the corner.
