What the Name Numerology Calculator Works Out
Four of the numbers below come from the letters of your name and two come from your date of birth. They are read together — no single number is meant to stand alone.
- Destiny, or Expression Number.
- Every letter of the name added together. Traditionally read as direction, aptitude and the shape of what a person tends to build.
- Soul Urge Number.
- The vowels only. Read as private motivation — what someone wants rather than what they do about it.
- Personality Number.
- The consonants only. Read as the first impression: the part of a person other people meet before they know them.
- Chaldean Name Number.
- The same letters scored against the older Chaldean table, which assigns by sound. It frequently disagrees with the Destiny number, and that disagreement is informative rather than an error.
- Life Path and Birth Day Numbers.
- Taken from the date of birth rather than the name, and included so the name numbers can be read in context.

How Name Numerology Is Calculated
Each letter is given a number, the numbers are added, and the total is reduced by adding its digits together until one digit remains — with one exception: if a step lands on 11, 22 or 33, the calculator stops and keeps it. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes carry no value and are ignored, so O'Brien and OBrien produce the same total.

Which Name Should You Enter?
This is the question that changes results most, and there is no single correct answer — different practitioners weight these differently.
- Full birth name.
- The name as registered, middle names included. Most traditions treat this as the primary chart and everything else as a later layer.
- The name you use now.
- What you introduce yourself as. Read as how you currently move through the world, which is often more recognisable to you than the birth chart.
- A married or changed name.
- Worth calculating alongside the birth name rather than instead of it. The comparison is the point — which numbers held, and which moved.
- Nicknames and short forms.
- Fewer letters means a smaller total and often a different number. Read a nickname as a facet, not as a correction to the full name.
Results differing between versions of your name is expected behaviour, not a contradiction. Nothing is stored between calculations, so running the same name three ways costs you nothing.
Pythagorean vs Chaldean Name Numerology
Pythagorean numerology assigns 1 to 9 straight down the alphabet — A is 1, B is 2, and the sequence repeats. It is the modern Western standard and the usual starting point. Chaldean numerology assigns values from 1 to 8 according to the sound a letter carries rather than its position, and holds 9 back as sacred, so almost no single letter is worth 9.

A Worked Name Numerology Example
Take a fictional Amara Lynn Cole, using the Pythagorean table. AMARA totals 16, LYNN totals 20 and COLE totals 17, giving 53. That reduces to 5 + 3 = 8, so her Destiny number is 8.
The vowels alone — A, A, A in Amara and O, E in Cole — come to 14, which reduces to 5, her Soul Urge. Note that Lynn contributes nothing here: this calculator does not count Y as a vowel. The remaining consonants total 39, reducing to 3, her Personality number. The two parts check out against the whole: 14 + 39 = 53.
Read together, that is someone whose outward drive is a number 8 — scale, structure, authority — while what actually motivates her is number 5, which wants freedom and change. That tension is the useful part of the reading, and it is the sort of thing a single number would have hidden.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is my name number?
Your name number is the total of every letter in your name, reduced to a single digit or a master number. On this site the Pythagorean total is labelled your Destiny (Expression) number and the Chaldean total is labelled your Chaldean Name number, because the two systems assign different values to the same letters.
Should I use my birth name or the name I use now?
Most traditions treat the full name on your birth certificate as the primary reading, on the basis that it was the name given at the start. The name you actually go by is usually read as a second, current layer rather than a replacement. Entering both and comparing them is the most informative approach.
Can changing my name change my numerology number?
The number will change, because the letters changed — a new surname or a dropped middle name produces a different total. Whether that means anything is a question of interpretation, not arithmetic. Numerology is a symbolic system, and nothing here predicts an outcome.
What is the difference between the Destiny and Soul Urge numbers?
The Destiny number uses every letter and is read as outward direction and ability. The Soul Urge uses only the vowels and is read as private motivation. They often differ, and the gap between them is usually the more interesting part of a reading.
Does numerology use my full name, including middle names?
Yes, when you are reading the birth name. Middle names carry letters, so leaving one out changes the total. The calculator reads exactly what you type, so include or omit middle names deliberately rather than by accident.
Is Y treated as a vowel?
Not here. This calculator counts A, E, I, O and U as vowels, so Y always falls to the consonant side and feeds the Personality number rather than the Soul Urge. Some numerologists treat Y as a vowel when it carries the vowel sound; that is a genuine difference of practice, and we apply one rule consistently instead of guessing per name.
